John Saunders Annual Lecture
Justifying Advocacy - Rev Dr Andrew Sloane

Wednesday 19 October 2011, 7.30-9.30pm
at Morling College

A Biblical and Theological rationale for speaking the truth to power on behalf of the vulnerable.

At the 2011 John Saunders Annual Lecture, Andrew Sloane will present a biblical and theological framework that justifies advocacy as a legitimate component of Christian involvement in the world, calling on ‘power’ to be used justly for the poor and disadvantaged. Don’t miss this engaging evening.

The John Saunders Lecture seeks to address contemporary social and ethical issues in Australia from a scholarly evangelical perspective.

The annual lecture was first held in 2008 and is sponsored by the Social Issues Committee of the Baptist Churches of NSW & ACT. The first official Baptist minister in NSW, Rev John Saunders was an evangelical with a missionary heart, a keen intellect, a gift for public speaking, and a passion for Christian social responsibility. He is best known for his work to reduce alcohol abuse and his advocacy of justice for Indigenous Australians.

In Australia, the state is free to introduce same-sex marriage legislation, and every citizen (including citizens organised in groups) may support or oppose such moves. Our marriage laws closely reflect the biblical ideal as agreed by a large majority of Christians here and internationally. If you say no to gay marriage in your church, but support laws that allow it in the community, you will need to demonstrate why your beliefs about marriage only apply to people in your church, and why you support laws that contravene biblical principles which you otherwise claim to affirm.
